This is a quick and easy sewing project that can be finished in a day. You will need 3 colors of fabric and some quilt batting.

First you will need to cut your top fabric, batting, and back fabric into 13.5″x18.5″ rectangles. Layer your fabric and batting into a sandwich just how you want it to appear in the finished place mat (pretty sides facing out).

Cut your binding fabric into one long strip 2.25″x70″. You might need to join several pieces. Fold the binding in half long ways and iron. Your folded over binding will now measure 1 1/8″ x 70″.

Next use your ruler and make a line across from one corner of the fabric to the opposite corner making a diagonal line. Repeat making diagonal lines every 2 inches. Sew on the lines.
Next repeat the line process again but this time make all the lines perpendicular from the previous lines every 2 inches to create 2 inch squares. Sew on the lines.

Now that the fabric is quilted trim off all the corners so that they are rounded (I used a salad plate for guide).

Add your binding around the edges of your place mat with the raw edges of the binding lining up with the raw edges of the front. Sew around perimeter and join binding together.
I did a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Then flip over binding to the back and sew around the perimeter again to attach it to the back (or sew by hand).
